October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Australian women, and finding it early gives the best chance of successful treatment.

Free breast screening

BreastScreen NSW offers free screening mammograms every two years for women aged 50 to 74. Women aged 40 to 49 and over 75 can also have a free mammogram. You do not need a referral from your GP.

To book, call BreastScreen on 13 20 50.

Know what is normal for you

Get to know how your breasts usually look and feel, and see your GP promptly if you notice any changes, such as:

  • A new lump or thickening
  • Changes in the size or shape of the breast
  • Changes to the nipple, such as a discharge or the nipple turning inwards
  • Skin changes, such as dimpling or redness
  • Ongoing pain that is unusual for you

Most breast changes are not cancer, but it is always best to get them checked.

Talk to your GP

Your GP can discuss your personal risk, including family history, and help you decide on the right screening for you.
