Spring Allergies and Asthma: How to Stay Ahead This Season
Spring in Sydney brings warmer days, but also higher pollen levels. For many people this means sneezing, itchy eyes and a blocked nose. For people with asthma, it can also mean more flare-ups.
Common signs of hay fever
- Sneezing and a runny or blocked nose
- Itchy, watery or red eyes
- An itchy throat or ears
- Feeling tired or finding it hard to sleep
Simple ways to reduce symptoms
- Check the daily pollen forecast and stay indoors on high pollen or windy days where possible
- Keep windows closed at home and in the car
- Shower and change your clothes after spending time outdoors
- Wear sunglasses to help protect your eyes
- Talk to your GP or pharmacist about which treatments are right for you
If you have asthma
Hay fever and asthma often go together, and poorly controlled hay fever can make asthma worse. Before the season peaks:
- Make sure you have an up-to-date written asthma action plan
- Use your preventer as prescribed, even when you feel well
- Check your reliever puffer is in date and carry it with you
- Ask us to check your inhaler technique
Thunderstorms during pollen season can also trigger sudden asthma symptoms, even in people who have never had asthma before. If you have hay fever or asthma, try to stay indoors with the windows closed before and during storms.
