October is Mental Health Month: Looking After Your Wellbeing
October is Mental Health Month in NSW, a good reminder to check in with yourself and the people around you. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and asking for help is a sign of strength.
Signs it might be time to talk to someone
- Feeling down, worried or on edge most days
- Changes in your sleep or appetite
- Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
- Pulling away from friends or family
- Finding it hard to cope with work, study or home life
Small things that help
- Stay connected: a phone call or coffee with someone you trust can make a real difference
- Move your body: even a short daily walk can lift your mood
- Keep a regular sleep routine
- Limit alcohol and other drugs
- Make time for things you enjoy
How your GP can help
Your GP is a great first step. They can talk through how you are feeling, check for any physical causes, and if needed, prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan. This gives you access to Medicare-subsidised sessions with a psychologist.
At Punchbowl Family Health Care, our psychologist Christine Moussa works on site, so your GP and psychologist can work together on your care. Christine also understands Arabic.
